Google’s AI App Will Work Without Internet Connection

Google AI app offline
Artificial intelligence (AI) can now be used on smartphones without an internet connection. Google is preparing to launch a new app for Android users called “AI Edge Gallery” with this technology. With this app, users will be able to generate images, write code, or get answers to various questions offline—without any internet access. This not only helps protect users’ privacy but also eliminates the need to send data to servers or wait for a response.
At the core of the “AI Edge Gallery” app is Google’s own language model, Gemini 3-1B. This model is just 529 MB in size but can process up to 2,585 tokens per second. As a result, tasks like text generation, document analysis, and smart replies in messaging apps can be performed in very little time. According to Google, the app is built on its “AI Edge” platform, using technologies like TensorFlow Lite and MediaPipe, which optimize AI performance based on the phone’s hardware.
However, Google has issued a caution: performance may vary depending on the device. Running larger models on older or less powerful phones may be problematic. In such cases, it’s better to use lighter models.
The app will feature two main tools: “AI Chat” and “Ask Image”, offering users AI assistance through both text and image-based inputs. Additionally, a section called “Prompt Lab” will allow users to test the model’s responses using single queries. The lab also includes ready-made templates and response settings.
Google has stated that the app is still in an experimental phase and has been released as an alpha version. However, it is completely open source and available under the Apache 2.0 license, meaning anyone can use, modify, or even use it for commercial purposes. Google also announced that an iOS version of the app will be launched soon for iPhone users.
